Keep Detroit Beautiful and the City of Detroit provided Free flowers to nearly 300 registered organizations, block clubs, churches, and schools at 12th Annual Detroit Beautification Day!

On Saturday, June 3, 2017, Keep Detroit Beautiful and the City of Detroit provided FREE flowers to nearly 300 registered community organizations, block clubs, churches, and schools to encourage community engagement in keeping Detroit clean, green, healthy, safe and beautiful. Keep Detroit Beautiful (KDB) is comprised of a three phase initiative which includes Earth Day, Motor City Makeover and Detroit Beautification Day. Detroit Beautification Day (DBD) is a day of revitalization, rejuvenation and celebration of taking pride in our city by participating in any clean-up or beautification efforts. Always held on the first Saturday in June of each year, Detroit Beautification Day is a day of citywide planting, recycling, and beautifying the neighborhoods of Detroit.

This year, the City of Detroit teamed up with Keep Detroit Beautiful to expand this unprecedented program aimed at community participation to help beautify our city. Detroit Council President Brenda Jones helped hand out over 1500 flats of flowers to the nearly 300 registered groups from all over the city. The flats of flowers were distributed from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Authority office located at 5700 Russell St. in Detroit.

Detroit Beautification Day was founded in 2005 by then Co-Chair of the Keep Detroit Beautiful Task Force, Beverly Smith, publisher of Detroit Smart Pages Newspaper and founder of the annual Detroit Thank You Awards. Smith has been co-chair of KDB since it was reinstated in 2000 by then Council Member Kay Everett. Smith could not have continued this tradition without the help of Angela Ireland and the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Authority and its staff, Council President Brenda Jones and her staff, partners; Waste Management and Green Living Science.

Angela Ireland has served as KDB’s Program Director since 2013. KDB has awarded over $60,000 in grants to Detroit organizations through its affiliation with Keep America Beautiful and over 8000 flats of flowers have been given to those organizations who registered for Detroit Beautification Day since its inception in 2005.
